How Does an Ultrasound Work?

An ultrasound is a key part of the pregnancy confirmation process, as it can confirm three different aspects of your pregnancy, including:

1.The viability of your pregnancy (It’s healthy, living, and growing)

While a pregnancy test is the first step to confirming your pregnancy, an ultrasound is the second step in confirming the viability of your pregnancy.

2. The location of your pregnancy (Did implantation occur inside or outside of your uterus?)

An ultrasound can show the location of your pregnancy, which is vital for ruling out an ectopic pregnancy—this is when a pregnancy grows outside your uterus and requires emergency medical treatment.

3. The gestational age (How far along you are)

To make a pregnancy decision, you will want to know how far along you are through an ultrasound. It’s important to note that medical abortion is only FDA-approved if your pregnancy is under 10 weeks old.
