Ultrasound
Wondering why you may need an ultrasound? We have the answers. Step two of pregnancy confirmation is an ultrasound, as it shares important information about your pregnancy and safeguards your health.
Here’s more about what ultrasound can show you during pregnancy and what to expect.
How Does an Ultrasound Work?
An ultrasound uses sound waves to create a picture of your internal structures and gives you the ability to make a decision regarding your pregnancy.
An ultrasound is a key part of the pregnancy confirmation process, as it can confirm three different aspects of your pregnancy, including:
1. The viability of your pregnancy (it’s healthy, living, and growing)
While a pregnancy test is the first step to confirming your pregnancy, an ultrasound is the second step in confirming the viability of your pregnancy.
2. The location of your pregnancy (did implantation occur inside or outside of your uterus?)
An ultrasound can show the location of your pregnancy, which is vital for ruling out an ectopic pregnancy—this is when a pregnancy grows outside your uterus and requires emergency medical treatment.
3. The gestational age (how far along you are)
To make a pregnancy decision, you will want to know how far along you are through an ultrasound. It’s important to note that medical abortion is only FDA-approved through 10 weeks gestation.
